Principal
Nelson Hunter
It is an honor to introduce myself as your new Principal. I am coming to you from being the Assistant Principal at Bayside Academy and before that at Audubon Elementary in our school district. I have been an AP for the last six years, have taught fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth grades in both English and Spanish, and before that was a para-educator working with multilingual learners. My breadth of experience working in education over the last 20+ years gives me a well-rounded outlook as an educator.
As part of the team here at Laurel, I am committed to fostering a kind, welcoming environment for our students and families where perspectives and ideas are acknowledged and considered in order to create a strong educational community. My focus will be to respond positively to challenges and have the determination to actively search for solutions. Being a fully bilingual Latino allows me to offer a sensitivity to the needs of our families who are not native speakers of English or who are otherwise underrepresented. I hope to bring our Laurel community even closer together.
I’m originally from Queens, New York and my parents moved us out to San Jose when I was young. My family is from Colombia, a gorgeous country I’m proud is part of my background and heritage. My wife and I live in Campbell with our two children, a 15-year-old daughter, Isabella, and an 11-year-old son, Alexander. We also have a bright eyed pup named Kylo who keeps us on our toes. As often as I am able to, you’ll find me up in Tahoe snowboarding, one of my absolute passions.
I am truly enthusiastic about working with our families to make this a successful school year. Please contact me when you need to discuss anything. I look forward to meeting you and our wonderful students to make this school year inspiring to all.
